Formula Risk: Contamination and Chronic Disease

Formula Risk: Contamination and Chronic Disease

The Similac recall for bugs is appalling. Contamination is not the scariest result of formula. I worked for a while as a nurse on a Medical/Surgical Unit, caring for adults with all kinds of ailments, mostly chronic diseases. I saw people suffering for years with pain and limitations. Formula-feeding has been proven to increase the risk for many of these conditions. I hate widespread formula-feeding, because I hate these diseases. No parent would willingly put their child through the misery of chronic disease.

Artificial Milk Increases Risk for Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis attacks joints with inflammation. The disorder is extremely painful and debilitating, as it steals away hand and finger function. One patient I had was unable to walk or care for herself. Her forearm and wrist were so twisted the opposite way that at rest her palm was face up. She was in agony, and relied on the care of her loving family for everything. She will probably die from bedsores, because of the torment moving causes her. I remember another man who was completely dependent on his family for all needs — even feeding and elimination. These are the extreme examples of people who I cannot forget.

Formula-Feeding increases Fatness. Again and again research has proven that formula feeding increases obesity. In my time as a nurse with adults it was obvious that we would have a lot less business in the hospital if we had less weight. I don’t need to tell you about all the dangers. Suffice it to say obesity is a dangerous problem, difficult to get rid of, a risk for every American child, and an issue none of us would wish on our children. Formula feeding increases obesity especially if given to a baby less than 3 months old.

“Humans are designed to be raised on human milk in the first few years of life, not cow’s milk. Human milk makes for slower growth. Cow’s milk is specially designed for baby cows, and it supplies the nutrients to facilitate the rapid growth natural to cows.” – Dr. Fuhrman

Baby’s Diet Increases Diabetes. Babies who are fed with artificial milk are more likely to get Childhood Diabetes (Type I), and Adult Diabetes (Type 2). Some of my sickest patients were the 18 year olds with Type 1 Diabetes, and the 40 year olds with Type 2 Diabetes. I remember an 18 year old, newly diagnosed with Diabetes, who was going on Dialysis. Uncontrolled diabetes had killed her kidneys. So sad. Once I caught a 50 year old man with uncontrolled diabetes, as he tried to get out of bed after forgetting about his second leg amputation. I fight formula because I fight diabetes.

Uncontrolled Diabetes injures blood vessels in the:

  • eyes, leading to blindness
  • stomach, leading to nausea
  • kidneys leading to kidney failure and dialysis
  • toes & feet leading to amputation
  • brain leading to stroke
  • heart leading to heart attack

Fighting Formula. Artificial-milk has saved the lives of orphans, some sick babies, and some babies of sick mothers, BUT the widespread use of formula has become a major health issue, and is causing increased chronic disease and premature death. My philosophy is wrapped up in this statement:

“If we look at formula as a medical intervention, a way to nourish a baby when breastmilk is not available, it stands up fairly well. The problem is that this substitute became a competitor. And formula simply can’t compete with human milk.” -Jeff Hoffman

I realize breastfeeding is difficult for many mothers. Some of our maternity practices and cultural trends are not friendly toward breastfeeding. That is why I seek to educate and support moms to have an easier time breastfeeding and healthier babies. This post is so sad for me to write because remembering the suffering and torment of my patients makes my heart heavy. More artificial milk increases risk proportionately for these dreaded diseases. Essentially, I work in Labor and Delivery to keep babies away from my old Medical/Surgical unit.

“While breastfeeding may not seem the right choice for every parent, it is the best choice for every baby.” -Amy Spangler

Other Proven Risks of Formula Feeding:

  • Pneumonia
  • Food Allergies
  • Breast cancer later in life for Baby Girls
  • Decreased IQ
  • Osteoporosis
  • Leukemia & Lymphoma
  • Hospitalization
  • SIDS
  • More likely to die before their third birthday

  1. […] The biggest side effect of an epidural a drop in blood pressure. Then Medicine must be given to treat low blood pressure, which poses risk to baby at birth. Also, Lots of fluids are given. Fluid overload slows labor, increases risk for serous bleeding at delivery (hemmorrhage), causes breast engoregment (which makes it difficult to latch a baby and is painful). The baby will also lose a lot of water weight after delivery, making it appear that he is not growing right and needs more milk, causing early supplimentation, causing decreased milk supply, causing all kinds of risks from not breastfeeding.
